Developing entrepreneurship in insular areas: challenges, opportunities and policy responses

The ECON secretariat invites you to attend the next ECON Commission Seminar on “Developing entrepreneurship in insular areas: challenges, opportunities and policy responses” to be held at the Corinthia Palace Hotel and Spa, Balzan (Malta) on Friday, 21 April 2017.

It is widely recognised that entrepreneurship is the lifeblood of EU and worldwide economy, leading to job creation, innovation and economic growth. SMEs on islands face constraints and extra costs resulting from the characteristics of insularity. However, these specific characteristics can be mitigated and perhaps even turned into opportunities through interventions in line with the principle of sustainability and addressing a range of cross-cutting policy areas.

The objective of the seminar is to promote entrepreneurship by identifying policy practices to mitigate the risks faced by entrepreneurs located on islands, with the wider aim of fostering resilience, combating seasonality and stimulating the sustainable socio-economic development of island communities.

The seminar will include two panel debates, one focussing on challenges and opportunities and the other on the required policy responses. Honourable Minister Mr Christian Cardona, will also be giving a presentation during the seminar.

Kindly register online through the official Maltese Presidency online tool, which can be accessed through the following link: https://delegate.eu2017.mt/. The delegation code for this seminar is: 377-MEAIM.Delegate
